How Many People Work from Home in 2024?

January 2023 data shows that roughly 27.2% of workers are working from home post pandemic. 

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2021, 27.6 million people in the United States worked from home, up from 9 million in 2019.

This represents a 206% increase in the number of people working from home over the past two years.

Some companies have returned to in-person working conditions or hybrid options since the pandemic.

That would account for a small drop in the percentage of those working from home.

For reference, currently we know that there are roughly 44% of organizations in the United States that aren’t engaging in remote work. 

51% of Flexjobs survey respondents said they enjoyed higher productivity by working from home during the global pandemic.

So, over half of employees who were provided a work from home solution said they were more productive at home than in the workplace. 

The most cited reasons why they are more productive working at home include a quieter work environment with fewer distractions. 

Pew Research revealed that 71% of U.S. teleworkers say remote work helps balance home and work life better.

Another 17% said that it didn’t affect them at all, and 12% said it had a negative impact on them.

Likewise, 56% of remote workers said that they are able to meet deadlines and get their work done more efficiently.

Only 7% said it hurt their productivity and 37% said it had no effect. 

In this study, hybrid and fully remote workers said their bosses and supervisors trust them to be productive.

How Many Companies Allow Work from Home?

16% of companies worldwide are fully remote.

72% of employers claim that offering work from home options enhances employee retention.

As of 2021, 73% of work at home employees during the pandemic returned to their onsite office at least once a week, according to an Owl Labs study report. 

Of this surveyed group in 2021, 78% said they feel more included onsite and 57% said they prefer working from home full time. 

Post-pandemic, 70% of remote or hybrid work employees want to continue working from home.

However, 39% of companies have required employees to come back full time to the office.   

A surprising 39% of employees said they think the office setting is best for individual work.

So, most people think working from home offers a better environment.

On average, remote workers make $4,000 more per year than on-site workers.

According to a Flexjobs study, this is due to the $4,000 in savings remote workers enjoy from no commute, vehicle maintenance, eating out, etc.

In the FlexJobs survey, 63% of workers who prefer working from home enjoy the work-life balance the most.

Another 31% said they like saving money over the daily commute and other savings that put more money in their bank accounts.

This is how this survey said remote workers prioritized the benefits of working from home. 

In a 2021 Good Hire survey, 61% of Americans working from home said they would be willing to take a 50% cut in pay to keep working from home.

What’s the Future of Work from Home World?

It’s expected that 36 million people will be working from home by 2025.

That’s 22% of the workforce that will be fully remote workers, even with companies implementing hybrid work models for their workers. 

Another study from AT&T Business revealed predictions (based on existing and previous statistics and figures) that by 2024, the hybrid work model will rise to 81% from 42% in 2021.

However, they also predict that a decline to 19% in the fully remote work model will occur by 2024, which is significantly lower than the 56% of remote workers in 2021. 

All experts tend to have a wide range of predictions for fully remote work.

Some say it will increase and others say it will decline.

The one thing they all agree about is that the idea of working from home is here to stay.
