With some of the most popular social media platforms having been around for 10 to 15 years, it may be surprising to see one so young as TikTok rise to the top and compete with them head-on.

What’s even more unique about TikTok is that it’s not American-owned, nor is it the only one of its kind!

TikTok and Douyin, the Chinese version of the app, have soared to success in the past three years and have made huge waves on the social media scene. TikTok debuted in 2017 as Musical.ly and was then merged and rebranded as TikTok in 2018.

What’s more, TikTok was also quite controversial being owned by a Chinese company, as some had concerns about privacy and data issues. Donald Trump even tried to force a ban on TikTok in 2020 for this very issue, a threat that became hollow when a federal judge didn’t allow it to proceed.

It’s easy to see where people may be envious— in only three short years TikTok has come to be known on a huge global scale and the owning company, ByteDance, is making some big bucks. The rest, however, has been a bit of a mystery.

How many users are on TikTok?

With no official data or TikTok statistics released by the company itself, many have been left wondering about the true nature of TikTok and how it measures up to common social media metrics and other platforms’ performance.

We’ve done the digging and found a ton of exciting TikTok statistics for 2024 that can give you a birds-eye view into how TikTok has hit its stride since 2018 and what may be in its future.

Important TikTok Statistics 2024

TikTok Video

Let’s dive right into these TikTok statistics for 2024. The history of TikTok and how it’s grown into what we know it to be today is quite interesting, and the numbers show it.

In each of the following 20 categories, you will find a variety of TikTok statistics that are relevant to the question, helping you have a better understanding of that aspect of TikTok in general according to data.

In fact, these are some of the most commonly-asked data-related questions about TikTok that you may have even wondered about yourself.

After all, who doesn’t love taking a look at the fine print!?

Using statistics is a great way to have a full understanding of what TikTok offers users around the world and why it finds itself in its current position of success.

Let’s get started!

1. How Many Videos are Viewed Daily on TikTok?

Not long after TikTok made its debut in 2018, data from TikTok statistics that we collected show that it hit over 1 million daily videos viewed. Talk about impressive!

TikTok made the transition from Musical.ly very seamlessly and showed results quickly.

TikTok has reached new levels of popularity, so it’s safe to say that their daily video view count is well over 1 million by now, but the data is still relatively low to confirm with the most recent info.

2. How Much Time do People Spend on TikTok?

People spend quite a bit of time on TikTok, and the numbers prove it. The average TikTok user will spend 52 minutes a day on the platform, landing our current minute count at 1,612 minutes per month.

It seems like a lot, but have you ever checked out your phone’s screen time feature? It’s easy to spend more time than we think looking at our screens.

In comparison with previous TikTok statistics, the growth looks as follows:

  • October 2019: avg. 442 min/month
  • November 2019: avg. 526 min/month
  • December 2019: avg. 561 min/month
  • January 2020: avg. 680 min/month
  • February 2020: avg. 732 min/month
  • March 2020: avg. 858 min/month

And just a year later in March 2021, the average monthly view time sits at almost double what it was the previous March. It’s been a tough year, can you really blame anyone for needing some entertainment in their lives?

TikTok has pretty much any type of content under the sun, from pirates to grandmas and anything in between. Even still, there are some types of content that perform better than others.

The top 10 most popular niches on TikTok have well over 1 billion views each. How do we know which ones are most popular?

Well, the view count is a clear marker, but most of these content types are discoverable through hashtag searches, and they are also the top performers on TikTok, rendering them more views in the long term.

Let’s take a look at each niche and how many videos they clock:

1. Entertainment: 443 billion views

2. Dance: 150 billion

3. Pranks: 54 billion

4. Fitness and Sports: 43 billion

5. DIY: 29 billion

6: Skincare/Beauty: 22 billion

7. Fashion/Style: 18 billion

8. Cooking and Recipes: 13 billion

9. Life Hacks/Advice: 8 billion

10. Pets: 8 billion

Entertainment and dance beat out the other contenders by a long shot, and it’s no surprise considering the fact that TikTok is heavy on dance challenges and also provides a lot of welcome entertainment for many viewers.

Regardless, it’s clear that other niches are still performing incredibly well on TikTok and there is still a huge opportunity to use TikTok for whatever goal you may have. New viewers are popping up every day.

4. How Many Users Are on TikTok in 2024?

How many users are on TikTok?

Since mid-2018, TikTok and its counterpart Douyin already had around 500 million monthly active users globally, so it comes as no surprise that TikTok is also thriving in the area of monthly active users currently.

Most people didn’t even know what TikTok was in 2018 and now it’s one of the top apps worldwide. In fact, if someone didn’t know what TikTok was today, it’s quite possible they live under a rock.

Since 2018, the monthly active user count has continued to increase, and it has finally reached a peak of over 1 billion monthly active users as of 2022.

Here is how other social media networks size up in comparison:

  • Facebook: 2.8 monthly active users
  • YouTube: 2 billion monthly active users
  • Instagram: 1 billion monthly active users
  • TikTok: 1.1 billion monthly active users

It’s quite incredible to note that TikTok holds a neck-and-neck spot with Instagram for monthly active users, especially since Instagram was created over 10 years ago, and in 3 short years this platform has reached a similar level.

5. Do Users Engage on TikTok?

TikTok statistics show that TikTok users are, in fact, the most engaged of any social media platform out there.

You may know by now that engagement is actually more important than followers for measuring success on social media networks, so seeing these engagement figures is a huge deal.

It can have big implications not only for algorithm development but also for potential marketing and advertising endeavors in the future.

The best way to weigh these engagement ratios is through micro and mega influencers on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok:

  • Instagram micro-influencers: 3.86% engagement rate
  • Instagram mega-influencers: 1.21% engagement rate
  • YouTube micro-influencers: 1.63% engagement rate
  • YouTube mega-influencers: 0.37% engagement rate
  • TikTok micro-influencers: 18% engagement rate
  • TikTok mega-influencers: 35% engagement rate

Wow! TikTok engagement levels are blowing both Instagram and YouTube out of the water. This is certainly a statistic to keep your eye on because it can have big implications in the future.

6. Who Has the Most Followers on TikTok?

The top TikTok user doesn’t have quite as many followers as the top Instagram user (Cristiano Ronaldo, 258 million), but it’s still up there.

The most followed user on TikTok is @charlidamelio, beating out the previous leader Loren Gray with her then-41 million followers. Charli d’Amelio has a whopping 109.8 million TikTok fans.

The most interesting thing about Charli d’Amelio is that she has gained a huge amount of TikTok fame, but her other social media platforms don’t have nearly as many followers. Her Instagram, for instance, only has 39 million followers.

Yes, she still has a lot. But is it near her number on TikTok? Not even close.

This is a prime example of how different platforms have different user bases, content types, and purposes. It’s vital to build a cross-platform presence, but it’s not a guarantee that you’ll perform the same across all platforms.

In any case, in March of 2020 Charli took over the top spot and has never looked back— she’s held it for a year now.

Other top accounts on TikTok include Addison Rae with 74.3 million followers, Zach King holding 54.5 million followers, and Bella Poarch sitting pretty at 52.4 million followers, just to name a few. The first record holder Loren Gray now sits behind 5 others that hold the top spots.

7. How Many Times was TikTok Downloaded on Android?

Alright, so what about downloads?

They’ve got to mean something, right? In order to understand downloads, we’ve got to look at both different phone operating systems, Android and iPhone.

The majority of app downloads will come from Google Play on Android and Apple Store for iOS. First, we’ll examine Android.

Android is home to 90% of the world’s TikTok users, as iPhones are not popular in every spot around the world. For this reason, the stats on Google Play downloads are a bit higher.

TikTok statistics from this year show us that 1.5 billion TikTok downloads have come out of the Google Play store overall, 75% of total TikTok downloads.

TikTok surged in popularity in South America at the end of 2020, with the highest downloads coming from Brazil. Although not in South America, Mexico was second after Brazil. Both of these countries have high users of Androids.

The US and Russia also have over 2 million downloads each, following Brazil and Mexico. TikTok was downloaded 850 million times worldwide in 2020 with WhatsApp being the second with roughly 600 million downloads.

8. How Many Times Was TikTok Downloaded on iPhone?

Now that we know about the performance on Google Play, we’ve got to take a look at iPhone downloads to truly understand the reach that TikTok has had.

It can be a bit tough to really nail down these figures depending on the time period and a few other factors, but there are some clear takeaways.

TikTok statistics show that there have been 459.2 million TikTok downloads on the Apple App store, accounting for 24.5% of TikTok’s total downloads aside from Android, which holds 75%. TikTok was the second most downloaded app in all of 2020 second only to Zoom.

With most workplaces moving online, it’s no surprise that Zoom was a necessity for more people, but even still, TikTok’s performance was impressive, beating out all other popular social media networks such as Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Twitter, Netflix, and all the rest.

TikTok moved up from its 4th place spot in 2019, so it will be interesting to see how TikTok downloads fare this year and if they are impacted now by the high level of users who already have the app.

9. Is TikTok the #1 App Downloaded Globally?

According to recent TikTok statistics, a quarter of all TikTok downloads come from the Chinese app Douyin, but yes, TikTok/Douyin is the number one app on a global scale. This is every app designer’s dream and for TikTok, it has become a reality.

With data from both Google Play and the App Store combined there have been a total of 6 billion TikTok downloads over the lifespan of the app.

The US is the country with the most TikTok users and accounts for 89 million downloads. In India, there were 120 downloads even though there was an imminent ban on the app itself.

TikTok experienced the highest number of downloads in March of 2020, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing many countries into quarantine. The app was downloaded almost 320 million times.

With such a difficult and confusing year, it’s no surprise that people needed a bit of relief in their life through the entertainment that is shared every day on TikTok.

TikTok India

TikTok has been banned in India due to privacy concerns, so while the app was extremely popular amongst Indian people, unfortunately, it is no longer operational in accordance with government rule.

This has caused ByteDance to effectively begin laying off employees in India, saying goodbye to over 2000 employees.

This is a huge blow, and it’s a huge blow to TikTok’s traction in India as well, considering that the app was one of the most-used video-sharing apps available in India, with most people spending 85-90% of their video-watching needs on TikTok.

Only time will tell whether or not TikTok will try to reenter the Indian market if the ban is ever lifted and political problems reconciled.

11. Are TikTok and Douyin the Same?

TikTok and Douyin are not the same, and while TikTok became available in 2018, Douyin was initially released in 2016. Impressively, it only took the team 200 days to get the TikTok version ready to release.

Douyin is the equivalent of TikTok in China, as they do not use the same TikTok app that is used in other places around the world. The daily user count of Douyin is 600 million, which is a massive number.

In 2019, they only had 250 million users daily, so it’s grown expansively. There is no doubt that TikTok’s user count and usage stats will continue to rise. Douyin competes in its market against Bilibili and Kuaishou with ease.

12. Who Uses TikTok More: Men or Women?

It’s an interesting question, and if you’re thinking about the US, then the answer would be women.

TikTok statistics have proven it to be more popular amongst women in the US; that’s not to say that men don’t use the platform, but women have edged them out by a small margin.

Actually, the percentages aren’t too far apart, but considering the millions of TikTok users, it actually ends up being quite a bit more women than men. 58.4% of all TikTok users are women in the US, whereas 41% of US users are composed of males.

Age also plays a part:

Most prominent user base of women: 20 to 29-year-olds

Most prominent user base of men: 10 to 19-year-olds

When you understand statistics like these, you can help cater your content to your target audience and also understand which audiences you may more effectively reach so as to expand your follower count.

When TikTok first came out, it was more popular among teenagers, and it still is. In fact, the most recent TikTok statistics show that 69% of users in the US overall are teenagers. That doesn’t mean, however, that older folks don’t have a place on the platform.

Over the past few years, TikTok has expanded to include many different niches and many different types of content, opening the playing field for other users to try things out and get comfortable.

Also, if business and marketing is going to play a part in TikTok, there’s got to be better diversity of users, which seems to be achieved. The age gap does make for some funny memes, though, we can say that.

14. What do Users do On TikTok?

Now that we know a bit about who the standard users of TikTok are and that they are the most engaged of any other social media platform, we’d love to understand what exactly TikTok users do on the platform.

There are many different engagements that users can take on TikTok, and based on a 2018 study, these are the most common actions:

These percentages reflect actions taken In the past month:

  • 68% watched someone else’s video
  • 63% liked someone’s video / followed someone else
  • 59% logged in without taking any actions
  • 55% uploaded a video
  • 43% uploaded a “duet” video
  • 41% uploaded a “react” video

Even though these TikTok statistics are a bit old, we can only imagine that the patterns stay relatively similar. It would be great to see updated numbers based on the higher numbers of users since 2018.

What’s great to see is that TikTok’s unique features, duet videos and reaction videos, are being used by almost half of users. This is pretty impressive and goes to show that these features make a difference on the platform.

15. How Many Languages is TikTok available in?

Tiktok Language

TikTok has a wide range of default languages available for use and claims that it can be changed at any time that the user would like. The fact that there is support for so many different languages is a big deal and has been a reason for the app’s global success, no doubt.

While content can still be viewed in any language, navigating the app is sure to be more comfortable in a language that you know like the back of your hand. It’s also a great way to practice if you’re learning a second language.

So how many languages are actually available on TikTok? There is some dispute about how many, and this may be due to the location and availability of the language as well as adding and removing languages.

Some sources claim there are 39, while some say 45 after counting what’s available. There are also multiple sources out there claiming that there are 75 available languages on TikTok. It’s probably safe to say that there are a minimum of 39 available.

16. How Much is TikTok Worth?

It’s a bit of a mystery how much TikTok is actually worth, but some conclusions can be drawn based on the investment capacity that people are willing to offer for TikTok.

ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, already has a huge worth of about $180 billion dollars, estimated. It’s no surprise that many offers have poured in for TikTok, some of them as high as $50 billion dollars.

While this is a huge sum of money and a rough estimate of what TikTok may be worth overall, TikTok remains owned by ByteDance for the foreseeable future.

The worth of TikTok may increase if there is a big spike in advertising or marketing endeavors.

17. How Much do Users Spend on TikTok?

The internet offers us a world at our fingertips, and with this new freedom comes a lot of potential for people to spend money at the drop of a hat.

They can even do it lying in their own bed! What’s easier than that?!

Since advertising and marketing efforts have been ramped up, the user spend rate on TikTok is one that many businesses and brands are interested in. They want to make investments on social media networks that are going to bring them a great ROI.

TikTok statistics show that it took the spot as the highest-grossing non-gaming app in January 2021, making it an incredible prospect for the future. Not only that, but TikTok statistics show that user spending increased almost 400%, totaling $128 million.

It’s worth noting that a majority of this spending was done in China, leaving only 8% from the US. (Hint: that’s still over 10 million dollars).

18. How Much do Creators Make on TikTok?

TikTok creators can make money a few different ways:

  • Through TikTok directly
  • Through influencer partnerships or sponsors
  • Through external endeavors

That means you can either make money through your TikTok content directly on TikTok, you can gain a partnership or create sponsored posts that businesses or brands will pay you for, or you could work as an affiliate or sell your own products or services.

All three are popular options across all different social media platforms, and TikTok is no different.

It sounds like an easy and convenient option to just make money through TikTok directly, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s nice that it’s there, but it won’t keep your lights on.

TikTok will start to pay you after you have at least 1500 followers, and you’ll earn around 2-4 cents per 1000 video views. You can also make money on other metrics, such as 10k viewers on a live show, which will get you $100.

As you can see, it’s much better to make money through partnerships or affiliate sales. You can make anywhere between 200 to 20k per post through influencer marketing, and some affiliate programs pay pretty well, especially for subscription services.

You can also create your own products or services and offer your goods or subscriptions to users. Creators have great potential to make money on TikTok.

19. Do Companies Advertise on TikTok?

Yes, companies do advertise on TikTok, and advertising on TikTok is only expected to expand in the future.

TikTok statistics show that it ranks sixth for consumer spending on a worldwide basis, and TikTok will give you guaranteed impressions depending on the ad package you’re looking to purchase.

If you’re looking to advertise on TikTok, Hootsuite has a go-to advertising guide for TikTok that can give you all the ins and outs, including ad types, account setup, and other vital info you need to know to do well.

If you’re curious because you don’t want to see a thousand ads in your TikTok feed, rest assured— TikTok is pursuing ads because they are not cheap. Since they are not cheap, you probably won’t see a flood of them anytime soon.

20. Is Influencer Marketing a Thing on TikTok?

As we mentioned in previous sections influencer marketing is a thing, and it’s becoming more and more popular every day. In fact, it’s not falling too far behind other social media platforms that are known for influencer marketing.

In 2022, this percentage of marketers plan to use:

  • YouTube: 58%
  • Instagram: 55%
  • Online ads: 43%
  • TikTok: 35%

It’s not a surprise that people are now turning to TikTok for influencer marketing, especially when users are more engaged and they have a whole new opportunity to reach more people in their target audience.

It seems, though, that many are still skeptical about the actual ROI that they can hope to get from TikTok influencer marketing; only 6% of marketers planning to use it expect an ROI. This is a bit surprising considering 35% opted to use it.

Perhaps there just isn’t enough time and experience to say for sure; better to assume a loss than gamble it all and lose everything. Risks can pay off, but with the popularity of TikTok and the right influencer combination, these marketers could be in for a pleasant surprise.

Whether or not TikTok will introduce well-developed in-app shopping features like IG is yet to be seen.

We’re going to take a look at five common questions that people have about TikTok.

After all, if something is popular, people are bound to ask questions. Let’s get started with some facts and TikTok statistics!

Who Owns TikTok?

Zhang Yiming

TikTok, as mentioned above, is owned by the company ByteDance, which is a Chinese company that was founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming.

The company is still a private company, making it tough to know exactly what the future will hold.

In case you missed it, TikTok almost wasn’t a thing in 2020 after Donald Trump claimed TikTok would be banned in the US as it proved to be a serious threat to users through data sales.

Trump urged for it to be sold to an American owner, but none of those things happened and TikTok continues to be owned by ByteDance, as is the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin.

Both TikTok and Douyin are the biggest apps of their kind in the current market, and they appear to be going strong for the future.

Whether or not the company will open up an IPO in the coming months is yet to be seen.

What Country Uses TikTok the Most?

tiktok usa

The number one country in terms of TikTok use remains the United States, leading by almost double the second place spot, Indonesia.

Indonesia has a rough 22 million users, with Russia trailing behind at 16 million. Following Russia is Japan, clocking in at almost 13 million.

We then move to Europe, with Germany holding a spot at 9 million and closely following is the UK with 8.5 million.

In the past months, however, tremendous growth has been seen in South America, with Brazil holding millions of users.

Mexico has also sprung up with many users of TikTok, as well as France and Italy.

The global hold of TikTok continues to expand.

Why is TikTok So Popular?

So, TikTok is thriving and it’s become a global power in social media. Why?

There are many possible answers to that question:

Trends: TikTok relies heavily on trends both in content and hashtags, and since it’s become so popular because of these things, many people have flocked to the platform to see what everyone is talking about.

Shares: with so many new users, it’s becoming more common for people to share TikTok videos with friends, prompting them to download the app.

Creativity: TikTok offers users a creative space that is very open and community-based, allowing for a type of content and creativity that isn’t exactly seen on other social media networks.

Quick-moving: TikTok has a quick newsfeed that shows people new videos in seconds, both from followers and other relevant users alike, making it easier than ever to discover new content.

What’s more, the videos are very short, playing to people’s ever-shortening attention span.

Interaction: it’s very easy to engage with other users on TikTok and build connections through videos.

Features: two top features of TikTok, duets and reactions, have set TikTok apart from other social media networks and helped users create collaborations in one of the easiest ways yet.

COVID-19: yes, that’s right, COVID helped TikTok become as popular as it was with people bored in quarantine.

TikTok saw some of its most substantial growth during this period.

Can You Make Money on TikTok?

Pretty much all social media platforms allow some form of monetization; after all, everyone is looking to increase the linings of their pockets, and money is a big motivator. So, yes, you can definitely make money on TikTok.

One thing to understand is that TikTok itself pays very little; per thousand video views you could expect to earn about 2 to 4 cents (USD).

You’ll have to have many thousands of video views to make anything worthwhile via the TikTok model.

Influencer marketing, however, is becoming popular on TikTok and you can make quite a bit of money that way.

The most followed TikTok user, Charli d’Amelio, earns roughly $50-95k USD per post. That’s some huge mula!

As an influencer who earns a partnership, you may have to do one or more of the following:

• Use your video content to directly or indirectly promote brands or products.
• Promote products you sell through your TikTok videos
• Create live videos and engage with your followers and viewers in relation to the product
• Cross-promote content and products on a variety of social media networks.

Those are the four most common tasks that you’ll do when you partner with a marketer as an influencer. You can make some good money doing this, but you’ll need to build up your audience first.

After all, if a marketer or brand is looking for an influencer to partner with, they’ll need one that can have a big impact on their reputation and bottom line.

If you play your cards right and are successful in building the level of influence needed, you can earn upwards of a million dollars or more. It’s already happening!

How Can I Get More TikTok Followers?

So, now that you know you can make big bugs on TikTok through more followers and engagement, how can you get more?

There are a few basic tips that can help:

Post consistently: when you post on a regular basis and offer your viewers more content, you’ll be likely to have more engagement and reach.

Use hashtags: hashtags are always trending on TikTok, so knowing which ones to use can help you to get your content out to more relevant users.

Check out your competitors: pop on over to some of your top competitors or favorite accounts and see what kind of content is performing well.

You shouldn’t copy others, but using their content as a model to understand your target audience better can help lead you to success.

Use a growth service: there are great services out there like TokUpgrade that can help you to engage with more users on TikTok and generate more interest in your account.

This is optimal because you’ll gain real followers, no fakes or bots. Very important.

Post great content: perhaps the most important thing you can do is to develop your own voice and personality and give people awesome content.

Put your personal spin on things and add value to people’s lives.

The better you understand your niche and target audience, the more your content will see results.

These are just a few things you can do to get more followers, but start now so that you can get off to a good start!

Ultimately, content is key to having a high-performing TikTok, right alongside developing your personality and image.
